Brooches, brooches, brooches! Super classy, artistic, interesting and unique. I have one pinned onto my big wool jacket, and I get compliments on it all the time. They are a way to decorate an otherwise potentially bland outer layer, and I love them. I also wear them on dresses as an alternative to a necklace. I can’t say enough about them, and I think they are the ultimate statement of hip…Now for this brooch.

Anatomy has been a passion of mine for years. Also being a body worker and doing therapeutic massage, I have poured over anatomy books. Anatomical drawings has always had had such a raw beauty to me, and literally interpret such intricate, complicated interconnectedness that is the awe of life. And so, often as it happens, one part spills into another, and my art has started expressing an inspiration I get from a totally other creative outlet of doing massage and studying the body. .

This etching of the sternum and entire ribcage is just beautiful. Clean lines and repeating shape makes this pleasing to the eye. With the right lighting, the blood red crystal heart sends out small radiating prisms, which was an unexpected design feature that I just love. In addition, this brooch is engineered different than anything I have made before, a process that I just learned in a metalsmith workshop. It is hard to tell in the photos, but the copper plate is actually raised off of the back plate of brilliant brass. This gives it a really dimensional feel to it, popping if off the hand sawed back plate- notice this in the side profile shot, as it adds a lot of depth to this piece and echoes the form of the true ribcage.
